< Part 3 > The Search

In my search for information, I used search engines such as Gallileo and Google Research. These search engines helped me find legitimate sources that I can trust. The first source I used to find information was "Working in the Emergency Room" by Veronica Reina. This article is published on Gap Medics in February of 2014, which makes it fairly recent. It includes information about the truths of working in the Emergency Room and includes a section about what nurses do. I found valuable quotes. For example, “Patients who come to the emergency room can be suffering from any number of problems, including chest pain, abdominal pain, broken bones and sprains, various cuts, abrasions, and contusions, skin infections, and headaches" (Reina). In addition to this quote, I found another, which is, “Medical professionals who work in the Emergency Room are specially trained to treat patients in a trauma situation,” as well as, “It is a department that does not generate loads of income for a hospital, but it is one of the most valuable departments in the organization” (Reina).

The second reliable source that I found was "What Do Nurses Really Do?" by Suzanne Gordon. This article is very specific to my topic by explaining the many tasks that nurses endure that the majority of the world may not know about. It furthered my research greatly and provided strong quotes such as, “Using their considerable knowledge, they protect patients from the risks and consequences of illness, disability, and infirmity, as well as from the risks and consequences of the treatment of illness” (2 Gordon). Another key quote I discovered is, “When nurses construct a relationship with patients or their families, they are rescuing patients from social isolation, terror, or the stigma of illness or helping family members cope with their loved ones' illnesses” (2 Gordon).

My third source consists of another article relating to the many different branches and types of nursing entitled "Nursing Salaries". In addition to providing the several different ranges of salaries that nurses earn, the article also includes the many different types of nursing, although there are more unlisted under the categories given in the article. Valuable quotes from this article include, “According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2016-17 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median national annual salary for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses is $42,490,” and, “According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2016-17 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median national annual salary for registered nurses is $66,640,” as well as “Advanced Practice Nurses hold a master's degree in a particular focus area and provide one-on-one patient care services similar to those a physician would perform” (AllNursingSchools.com).

I also conducted an interview with my grandma, who is a retired RN. She told me about the many hardships she endured while working as a nurse and also informed me of the many things she enjoyed about nursing. She was very helpful in assisting me with my research by suggesting concepts that the majority of people would not know about nursing. < Interview >
